PROTOCOL
It is both an honor and a solemn duty to address you today. On this significant occasion of the International Day of Education, we gather to not only commemorate the pursuit of knowledge but to underscore the profound impact that education wields in fostering enduring peace within our community.
In my capacity as a dedicated public servant, I am acutely aware of the pivotal role that education plays as a fundamental human right, a public good, and a shared responsibility. Today, as we mark the sixth International Day of Education under the theme “Learning for Lasting Peace,” let us deliberate on the profound influence education has, not only on individual lives but on the very essence of our society.
Our esteemed Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has charted the course with the Arise Agenda—a visionary blueprint for the progress and prosperity of Akwa Ibom State. Central to this agenda is an unwavering commitment to providing inclusive and equitable quality education. So far, the Governor has undertaken key interventions in the education sector such as remodeling of primary and secondary schools across the state, launching of N100 million naira Education Trust Fund for students with disabilities in tertiary institutions, payment of bursary to students in tertiary institutions, continuation of free and compulsory education and many others. Governor Umo Eno understands that education is the cornerstone for achieving gender equality and dismantling the cycle of poverty that afflicts millions within our state.
Mkpat Enin Local Government Area proudly aligns itself with this vision of our golden Governor and global initiative, dedicated to ensuring lifelong learning opportunities for every citizen. From my time as the Vice Chairman of the Local Government, I instituted an annual quiz competition for secondary schools in Mkpat Enin where educational materials are donated to winning schools and even as consolation prizes. This is an initiative that will continue under my leadership as the Transition Committee Chairman. Recently, we announced a free enrollment for indigenes of Mkpat Enin who intend to write the upcoming JAMB examination. There are so much more coming.
We recognize that education transcends the confines of textbooks; it is about instilling values, fostering positive attitudes, and equipping individuals with the skills to become agents of peace in their communities.
Against the backdrop of escalating challenges such as violent conflicts, discrimination, racism, xenophobia, and hate speech, our commitment to peace assumes heightened importance. Our focus extends beyond the classroom to counteract hate speech, especially in the digital age. Mkpat Enin Local Government is resolute in fostering a culture of tolerance, understanding, and unity among our residents.
As the Transition Committee Chairman, I assure you that we are actively working towards realizing the vision set forth by Governor Umo Eno. Together, let us ensure that the benefits of education and peace resonate throughout Mkpat Enin LGA. Our community possesses the capacity to transform, to empower, and to contribute significantly to the broader fabric of peace and development in Akwa Ibom State.
Thank you for your esteemed attention, and may this International Day of Education inspire us all to embrace the transformative power of learning for enduring peace.
