A SPEECH BY THE TRANSITION COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN OF MKPAT ENIN LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, HON MERCY BASSEY AT THE SPECIAL STAKEHOLDERS’ MEETING/UNVEILING OF THE 35TH ANNIVERSARY WRAPPER ON WEDNESDAY, APRIL 17, 2024

I stand here with utmost pleasure to welcome all our stakeholders to this meeting. As a people bound by a common cultural heritage, it is expected that we gather like this as one to make contributions on how to move our dear local government forward. The challenges facing the country presently are not peculiar to a particular party, religion or ethnic group. All of us are buying from the same markets where prices of food items have increased outrageously. So, if we are together in facing these challenges, it is only wise that we stay together in finding solutions.

This stakeholders’ meeting is, first of all, to re-awaken the spirit of patriotism among us. It is a meeting that is meant to reignite our love for Mkpat Enin and earnest desire to see our people overcome the present challenges. Amidst the current situation, this meeting was also borne out of the need for us to begin to leverage our greatest strength which is our unity, our collective ideas, skills and experience. As stakeholders, our people continuously look up to us for directions and solutions because we are meant to be the pathfinders. That is why within and outside this local government, Mkpat Enin is judged by the actions and inactions of the leaders.

This meeting will further provide us with the opportunity to appraise and evaluate our progress. First, at the level of leadership; how the Transition Committee has fared in terms of performance and areas to make improvements. Secondly, at the level of community participation; how much have our people and communities supported the government in fostering development? Many of the challenges we are facing in Mkpat Enin are issues that we can tackle if we are sincere and committed. Again, that is why as an administration, the Transition Committee is taking the lead by hosting this all-inclusive stakeholders’ meeting irrespective of political interest, career paths or religion.

This Transition Committee has only existed for about four months, and by a simple calculation, that is a very tiny fraction of 35 years. But that notwithstanding, we have made a mark so far through quality leadership, good governance and driving people-cantered policies. Since coming into office, we have consciously aligned our programmes and interventions to the ARISE Agenda of our dear Governor, Pastor Umo Eno. Within these few months, we have touched all the five key areas of the A.R.I.S.E. which are Agriculture, Rural Development, Infrastructure, Security and Education.

So far, in agriculture, we have undertaken strategic interventions to revitalize the agricultural sector and promote food security. We launched the Back-To-Farm Initiative with the distribution of high-quality agriculture seedlings and materials to local farmers, aimed at increasing productivity and enhance the livelihoods of rural communities. We have supported women-led farmers’ cooperatives by helping them with registration.

Our effort in rural development include the grading of highly economic viable roads across the four Clans in the Local Government. The roads are;

– Ikpa Ikono Clan – Ibekwe/Ikot Mkpeye/Ikot Uya/Ikot Eda/Iffe Town/Ikot Essen.

– Ukpum Minya – Ikot Ekpe/Ikot Obiokoi/Ikot Obiotong/Ikot Ekop.

– Ibiaku Clan – Esa Ekpo/Ikot Idiong/Ibiaku.

– Ikpa Ibom Clan – Ikot Isighe/Ikot Ukwa/Ikot Akpan Ukam/Ikot Okopodong/Ikot      Obioekpong/IkotEkong.

We consider infrastructure as the fulcrum of economic development. Therefore, in demonstrating this, we have undertaken a number of infrastructural interventions like the comprehensive renovation and facility upgrade at the Health Centre in Ikot Inyang Okop Community, execution of water project in Ibianga Community, and installation of solar power in Ikot Inyang Okop, and kick-started the process of revamping  the moribund shoe factory in the Local Government Council.

In security, we have adopted multiple approaches to ensure security management in the Local Government. One of such approach is collaborations with security agencies and community youths to enhance security in the communities.

Under education, we have demonstrated our vested interest in educational advancement. To mark the 2024 International Day of Education on Wednesday, January 24, the Transition Committee visited schools across the four Clans in Mkpat Enin where we donated educational materials to students. Also, ahead of the 2024 Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examination, we have facilitated free Jamb registration for indigenes of Mkpat Enin intending to write the examination. Other noteworthy achievements recorded by this administration include, supporting Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) with items such as mobility aids, business equipment, cash gifts and many others; building of official website for the Local Government (www.mkpatenin.ak.gov.ng) which amongst other things ease obtaining certificate of origin.

Dear stakeholders, despite all of these, we know that there is still a lot more to do. Like I have always said, the task of developing Mkpat Enin is a collective one which therefore places a certain level of responsibility on everybody’s shoulders. As we begin the preparations to mark another milestone in our journey as a people, I urge us to keep faith in our dream of a better and prosperous Mkpat Enin.

As part of our efforts to chart a new course for our local government, this administration will be hosting the 35th Coral Jubilee Celebration of Mkpat Enin which is scheduled for Friday, May 3, 2024. The theme for the anniversary is “Mkpat Enin @ 35: Our Journey, Our Story”. We have lined up of activities and very important dignitaries for the Coral Jubilee that will be made public in due time. Today, as we unveil the 35th Coral Jubilee wrapper .I am convinced that this uniform will strengthen our unity across political interest and religious beliefs, we are known for uniqueness and therefore the entire State will be expecting nothing less from us during the celebration.

Thank you for your love and time.

God bless Ikpa Ibom Clan.

God bless Ibiaku Clan.

God bless Ukpum Minya Clan.

God bless Ikpa Ikono Clan.

God bless Mkpat Enin.

God bless Akwa Ibom State
