




In a bid to bolster local governance and enhance the implementation of the Federal Government’s Food Security Emergency Programme, Hon. Mercy Bassey, Chairman Transition Committee, Mkpat Enin, actively participated in a two-day sensitization workshop held at the Nicon Luxury Hotel, Abuja from 6th – 7th February, 2024 Organized by the Presidency, Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Political and Economic Affairs Office, in collaboration with SEGNIP Promotions Limited, the workshop aimed at strengthening the role of local governments in maximizing the benefits of the Federal Government Food Security Emergency Programme.
Hon. Mercy Bassey, alongside other transition committee chairmen, immersed herself in discussions and sessions that focused on vital strategies for effective program implementation. Participants gained valuable insights into strengthening the capacity of local governments, with a specific emphasis on grassroots benefits. The workshop provided an invaluable platform for networking and collaboration among facilitators and participants, sharing experiences and best practices. This collaborative effort is expected to contribute significantly to the success of food security initiatives at the local government level.
The overarching goal of the Federal Government Food Security Emergency Programme is to ensure sustainable access, availability, and affordability of quality food for all Nigerians. Simultaneously, the program aims to position Nigeria as a substantial net provider of food on the global stage.
Armed with the knowledge and strategies acquired during the workshop, such as Implication of climate change on food production in Nigeria (drought & flood effects), the use of indigenous technology, Resistance varieties, renewal energy & fighting insecurity, encourage farmers grouping through co-operative and synergizing infrastructural development to meet farmers integration, tackling factors affecting food production including insecurity and inflation and funding/financing of Agriculture value chain by NIRSAL Microfinance Banks among many others, Hon. Mercy Bassey is poised to integrate these insights into the local context of Mkpat Enin. The active implementation of learned strategies and continued collaboration with other local governments and stakeholders will further strengthen the effectiveness of food security initiatives within the community.
