MKPAT ENIN CELEBRATES WORLD MENSTRUAL HYGIENE DAY

To commemorate this year’s World Menstrual Hygiene Day, which holds every 28th May, the Chairman, Transition Committee Mkpat Enin LGA Hon. Mercy Bassey led government dignitaries and functionaries to sensitised students in Mkpat Enin on the need for a healthy menstrual hygiene. Reflecting on the theme “Together For A Period Friendly World” she stressed that it’s a call for action, reminding us that our efforts can transform the lives of girls and women in Mkpat Enin and the world at large.

Hon Bassey identified culture taboos and lack of information as factors that leads to harmful misconception about menstruation which results in fear, shame and isolation for girls and women. Comprehensive menstrual health education that involves boys and men is needed to create a supportive environment.

Dr. (Mrs) Aniekan Ubong Ekefre of Department of Philosophy, University of Uyo who is also the wife of a former chairman, Sir Ubong Ekefre in her address said Menstrual Hygiene Day is a global campaign which unites nonprofit organisation, government, individuals, businesses and the media with a goal to break the taboos, raises awareness, shifts negative social norms around menstrual hygiene health and urge leaders to prioritize and act on menstrual health hygiene.
Several stigmas had resulted in negative perceptions about menstruation and those who menstruate across different cultures and countries and these are communicated to girls and women from a young age. These stigmas Dr Aniekan says leads to negative consequences for the woman’s physical, mental, sexual, social status and quality of life

Hon. Mercy Bassey called for policies that will promote menstrual health equity, improved funding for menstrual health initiatives and support for sustainable menstrual products as crucial steps towards a period friendly world. She emphasizes the need to create the Mkpat Enin of our dreams and a world where menstruation is no barrier to education, work or personal growth. These we can do by supporting one another, sharing knowledge and breaking down the walls of silence and stigma thereby empowering women and girls to reach their full potential

The highpoint of the event was the distribution of menstrual kits to the students.
